Central Harlem, Lenox Avenue at 111th Street

The 2nd Canaan Baptist Church at 10 Lenox Avenue.

In other news, the people have spoken. Three of them, anyway. All vehemently opposing Wikipedia's crazy idea that Midtown Manhattan extends to 14th Street. See comments at March 11 entry. So be it.

See map.

And while we're at it, who calls W. 111th St. Central Harlem? Isn't that Morningside Heights?

Even if it's OK to call East 111th St. East Harlem (otherwise known as Spanish Harlem), West 111th still isn't Central.

It's Morningside Heights between the Hudson River and Morningside Park, but Harlem starts on the other side of the Park. Remember there was all that fighting when Columbia was going to build a gymnasium and students accused the University of putting in separate entrances for white students on the west side and Harlem residents on the east side? Well, I don't know if you personally remember; it was in 1968. But it's sort of folkloric, I think.

No, I don't remember that. But I remember my first job as a welfare caseworker in 1962, my visiting street was E. 111th, and that was Spanish Harlem; but if we said we were making visits in Harlem, we didn't mean we were crossing Fifth Avenue. We meant we were going up to 125th St.

But I'll concede you're probaby right. I, myself, am folkloric by now.
