Inwood, 211th Street at Vermilyea Avenue

Vermilyea Avenue ends here, begins at Dyckman. It is totally an Inwood Avenue and, according to The Street Book, was named for the family of Isaac Vermeille, who settled in upper Manhattan in 1663. Otherwise, you might think it was named for vermillion.

Good research. I am a Vermilyea, and I live in Anchorage AK. Our family migrated from Haarlem, Netherlands around 1660, but fled the island when it was handed over to the brits. The origin of our name is the subject of some debate, but is thought to come from a town in the north of France. It does not reference the color red, but it is interesting that Inwoodians have adopted the fashion of "redwashing" the place. If you meet anyone named Vermilje, Vermilye, or Vermilyea, you can be certain that we are all ancestors of this founding family of "New Haarlem". Your project is a great idea, and I may do something similar in my northern city. Cheers!

Hi, Phil, sorry to be so late answering, but I only now got notification that your comment was here. (It's Verizon's fault.) I looked back at my photographs for that shoot and I have a couple I didn't post, but no addresses show. From the looks of the block, I don't think much has changed. If you send me your email address, I can send you what I have.

And Peter, thanks for your comment. I really like hearing from former residents.
