102nd Street east of Amsterdam Avenue ends in a cul de sac surrounded by the Frederick Douglass Houses and on the south side, the Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School. This photograph shows a little piece of the school. But, of course, it's all about the car.

You all know that Amsterdam Avenue is really Tenth Avenue. The name was changed in 1890 (above 59th Street) to add some cachet to the neighborhood.

Red, white and blue always catches my eye.

These were three of the most cheerful guys I've met in a long time. One of them saw me with a camera and called to his buddies to come pose for me.

For the sequence, go here. This is only if you have time on your hands and nothing better to do.

Alice is in town visiting Luka and today the three of us met at Turkuaz for a fabulous buffet brunch. I've been thinking about it ever since. Afterwards I went off by myself on a photowalk, across 101st Street to Amsterdam Avenue and up to 110th.

It was a warm August day, and compared to yesterday, highly acceptable.

This is the back entrance to the Park Avenue 7th Regiment Armory, built 1877-79. The AIA (American Institute of Architects) Guide calls it "a friendly brick fortress."

In time, we'll get to the Park Avenue side, but if you can't wait, take a visit to the nyc architecture site.

This is not Park Avenue, not Madison Avenue, not Fifth or Third or Second. This is scruffy, busy, interesting Lexington Avenue. Even the name is more interesting. Notice Gotham City Comics on the 2nd floor above the liquor store.

Time for a new walk. Last Friday, I took my camera out at lunchtime, took the No. 6 to 59th Street and walked up Lexington to the 68th Street stop, then back to the office.

I don't look forward to the avenues as much as the side streets because they're wider, so it's hard to shoot across the street, and they're often not as interesting as the smaller side streets. But Lexington is different.

I have crossed from St. Nicholas Avenue to Broadway at 182nd Street and I'm walking down Broadway to 175th and over to Ft. Washington Avenue where I'll take the A train home.

This is the George Washington Bus Terminal and the reason it is not famous as an architectural landmark, so they say, is because it is a bus terminal and the bus goes to New Jersey. Please go to nyc-architecture to become properly impressed. The architect was Pier Luigi Nervi. Note that you must scroll down past the GW Bridge information to get to the bus terminal. To see more of my shots of the terminal go here.

Lots of street art in these blocks. There was the long mural at the Rite-Aid I posted on August 8, and here are two more. It's funny how we've come to accept them (haven't we?), and yet it's quite a remarkable phenomenon. These are paintings on the sides of buildings, folks! Just your everyday ordinary building.

One of the more eye-catching displays I've seen.
Sometimes I leave the enlargement over-big so that it runs off the screen, because I think seeing the detail is worth losing the whole picture. This is one of those times.

Now I've turned up St. Nicholas Avenue; you can see the back of McDonald's at far left. You may have noticed that so far the streets have very few people on them. It's about 11 a.m., I think. This will change, but I don't know if it's because of the later time or the changed location.

Notice the Rite-Aid at the right. I'm showing you a closeup below because this is a kind of street art I haven't seen before. The background is made up of brushy strokes in orange and yellow and then the wall is covered with Spanish written in white, even, neat lines. If you enlarge the photo and you know Spanish, you can read it. If you can, please tell me what it says.

Ah, Sunday morning in the park. Or square.

That's Duarte Square, a tiny little park opposite the very short block that McDonald's is on. I'm giving you the above link to Duarte Square so you can read up on Juan Pablo Duarte of Dominican Republican fame. However the statue and the square referred to in the New York City Parks link is downtown between Canal and Grand Streets. I'm here to tell you there's a Duarte Square uptown as well, and it's official, with its own New York City Park sign with maple leaf.

It's not that I'm a fan of McDonald's; I just like the way it's grabbed the entire tiny block here. Yes, that is a block. It's where Broadway veers off to the west and exchanges streets with St. Nicholas Avenue, which continues where Broadway would have if it hadn't veered off. Check your maps.

This was yesterday, Sunday morning. I looked over my map and decided to clear up some raggedy edges so I took the train to 168th, walked up Broadway a couple of blocks, then came back and walked up St. Nicholas to 182nd Street, then across to Broadway and back down to the A train at 175th. This was to fill in little patches on my map. You just cannot walk these streets efficiently, although you could probably do it more efficiently than I do.

I see this little guy at the window about 12' from the ground and take a few shots and a woman comes over to me and asks me if I want a kitten or two. That's the grandfather she says. No, no, I already have two, I say. So we chat a bit and then she runs upstairs to show me the rest of the family.
