It is understandable that someone walking by might not notice the arch tucked back between the buildings.

Here's a fuller view of it.

Then tonight I went back and took a photo from across the street.
This is the Seaman Arch.
In 1851 Valentine Seaman built a house on the hill between what are now Park Terrace East and West, and this arch was built in 1855 as the gateway to the estate. Please go to My Inwood for wonderful old photographs and a history of the arch.
By the way, every source I found for this arch states that it is located at Broadway and 215th Street, or just north of 215th Street or near 215th Street. See that street sign in the last photograph? It clearly says 216th Street. I'm just saying . . .
See map.

This is fascinating - I really like that you included the link to the history of the Seaman's Arch. I think your blog would be such a treat for me if I were planning to visit Manhattan sometime soon - a great treat if I lived there.
