My plan has been to hang out on the lower east side this summer, but damned if I'm going to do it in this heat.  Until the weather gets more reasonable, I'm just doing little short convenient walks.  So last night after my salsa class at Dance Manhattan, I photographed one block of 19th Street from Sixth to Seventh Avenue.  Up ahead is that block.  What awaits?

So salsa.  It goes with learning Spanish, right?  I don't have natural talent at either, but I try to live by that old adage, you know, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  I will learn how to roll my rrs.

I know, I know, I said it was going to be Chinatown tonight and here I am giving you Tribeca. Sorry. Tribeca on the way to Chinatown, then Chinatown.

I'm late because I was watching the convention. How about that Michelle? I'm happy to be a Democrat for the first time in a long while, and I'm so proud of our country, also for the first time in a long while. (I can say that because I don't plan to run for political office.) And how about Senator Teddy? There was a time I curled my lip at Ted Kennedy, but time passes, things change, and now I have to say he's an all right guy.

So the walk. Bill, my son, was here for a visit, and Friday we went downtown for a photowalk. The plan was to walk around Chinatown and get a late lunch somewhere. We took the A train to Canal, walked Sixth Avenue to Walker and Walker to Canal. When we got off the train at Canal, what is the first thing I see? Construction! Another condominium. One York.

Midtown, Sixth Avenue at 33rd Street

This is finally the end of this walk which began two weeks ago as a quest to find a tank top in the right size and color. It's 8:30 and sarting to get dark but the destination Gap is up here on 34th Street on the right. I was prepared to go to every Gap in the city to find this tank top, but no need. The maroon red-purple color was featured,; they had multiple tank tops in my size, as well as other styles, and all I had to do was try to restrain myself.

So if you see a petite woman in a flowered silk skirt and maroon tank top taking pictures, stop and say hello.

Midtown, Bryant Park at Sixth Avenue

I wanted to go for a walk Christmas morning when the streets were quiet because most people were still at home, or so I thought, and I decided to try the Times Square/Bryant Park area. I took the A train to 42nd Street, walked across 41st to Bryant Park (that's Eighth to Sixth Avenue) and then turned around and came back. I still do not know if most people were at home this morning because I didn't get out until 2:30, and by that time, they were definitely out.

I'm showing you this shot at Bryant Park at the end of my walk because, by golly, there is a Christmas tree! See, way there in the back? Those tent-like things in the middle ground are the temporary setups for the holiday gift fair. And in the background is the back of the main branch of the New York Public Library.

Tomorrow we'll start at the beginning.

Greenwich Village, Sixth Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets

Last night I went down to the Village to have dinner with my cousins. This is where I got off the subway at West Third Street, looking up Sixth Avenue at the ghostly Empire State Building 31 blocks away.

When you were a kid, did you call it the Umpire State Building?
